HLTAID009 - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and applies to anybody who may be required to provide CPR in a range of situations including community and workplace settings.
Provide CPR HLTAID009 is a standalone First Aid course, as well as a core unit of competency in the popular Provide First Aid HLTAID011 course that covers the theory and practice needed to provide First Aid in response to a breathing or cardiac emergency.
The CPR technique combines chest compressions and artificial ventilation to return the flow of oxygenated blood to major organs when a person’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped giving you the capability of performing a lifesaving procedure, and potentially preventing a casualty from suffering permanent brain damage due to oxygen deprivation or life becoming extinct.
Course Content
The learner must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks, and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:
- Recognise an emergency situation
- Identify, assess and minimise immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
- Assess the casualty and recognise the need for CPR
- Seek assistance from emergency response service
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with the ARC guidelines
- Maintain breathing and circulation in an adult, child or infant following cardiac arrest.
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
- Operate automated external defibrillator (AED) according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
- Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies
- Knowledge of the ARC Guidelines relevant to the provision of CPR
- Safe work practices to minimise risk and potential hazards and harm
- Infection control principles and procedures
- Duty of care requirements
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
- Consent requirements
- Responding to signs of an unconscious casualty

Re-accreditation
HLTAID009 Provide CPR should be renewed every 12 months.
HLTAID010 - Provide Basic Life Support
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide basic life support in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and applies to anybody who may be required to provide First Aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other First Aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance.
Course Content
- Knowledge of the ARC Guidelines relevant to the provision of CPR

- Infection control principles and procedures

- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
- Consent requirements
- Confidentiality requirements

Re-accreditation
HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support should be renewed every 3 years.
HLTAID009 Provide CPR should be renewed every 12 months.
HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and applies to anybody who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
The Provide First Aid course is the minimum requirement for workplace First Aid compliance
This accredited workplace first aid course will prepare learners to handle most workplace and day to day emergency situations giving them the confidence to manage a sick or injured casualty using the principles of basic first aid.
Learners will be assessed through a theory questionnaire, the demonstration of practical skills, participation in role plays and analysis of case studies.
NOTE: Learners attending will be required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor to meet the performance criteria for assessment.
Course Content
The course will provide learners with skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Recognise an emergency situation
- Identify, assess, and manage immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
- Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response
- Assess the situation and seek assistance form emergency response services
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines
- Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
- Obtain consent from casualty where possible
- Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
- Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
- Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies
- Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents
- Participate in debriefing to address individual needs

HLTAID012 - Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting
This course is developed for teachers, parents and carers and will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, in a range of situations for adults and children in an education and care setting.
Course Overview
The unit applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies and may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).
Learners will be assessed through a theory questionnaire, the demonstration of practical skills, participation in role plays and analysis of case studies.
